Darlene Wall Hallem

I send my sympathy to the family of Arnold; he is gone too young but reading his obit in the Ellendale paper, he had a full and active time while here. First thing I notice by the pictures he aged well and is very recognizable since I haven't seen him probably since we left the Forbes area after high school. Sister Gloria and I were in the same grade and spent time staying overnight at each other's home. I recently came across a picture of Gloria with her doll sitting on our kitchen stool. But this is about Arnie and I just remember him being around when I was at Gloria's place, and don't remember if he was a pest. I only have younger brothers so was used to them always being there. The best story I remember about Arnie: Our family gave him a ride home from a basketball game and he was worked up because he didn't get the ball as much as he would have liked. Almost verbatim, "I was standing there wide open and they wouldn't pass me the ball." It was quite funny at the time and I've never forgotten it. I think of the Kauk place every time I go on the road out of Forbes and the destruction of it from the tornado. Reading Gloria's writing, we always have those memories stored inside us. In fact, I'm going up home this morning and will go past on my way to church Sunday. I respect Arnie for his Naval service and his support of veterans. My husband is a member of the Elks and a good share of their mission is supporting vets. We collect about $20,000 of goods and money for the veteran's home at Hot Springs, SD, just from the Pierre area every Christmas and they always appreciate our coming and remembering them. I think I'm not staying on track. Enjoyed the pictures on this site. You have great memories to look back on as you miss the main man in your lives. God bless all of you.
