Condolence From: Darlene Wall Hallem
Condolence: I send my sympathy to the family of Arnold; he is gone too young but reading his obit in the Ellendale paper, he had a full and active time while here. First thing I notice by the pictures he aged well and is very recognizable since I haven't seen him probably since we left the Forbes area after high school. Sister Gloria and I were in the same grade and spent time staying overnight at each other's home. I recently came across a picture of Gloria with her doll sitting on our kitchen stool. But this is about Arnie and I just remember him being around when I was at Gloria's place, and don't remember if he was a pest. I only have younger brothers so was used to them always being there.

The best story I remember about Arnie: Our family gave him a ride home from a basketball game and he was worked up because he didn't get the ball as much as he would have liked. Almost verbatim, "I was standing there wide open and they wouldn't pass me the ball." It was quite funny at the time and I've never forgotten it.

I think of the Kauk place every time I go on the road out of Forbes and the destruction of it from the tornado. Reading Gloria's writing, we always have those memories stored inside us. In fact, I'm going up home this morning and will go past on my way to church Sunday.

I respect Arnie for his Naval service and his support of veterans. My husband is a member of the Elks and a good share of their mission is supporting vets. We collect about $20,000 of goods and money for the veteran's home at Hot Springs, SD, just from the Pierre area every Christmas and they always appreciate our coming and remembering them. I think I'm not staying on track.

Enjoyed the pictures on this site. You have great memories to look back on as you miss the main man in your lives. God bless all of you. Darlene Wall (Berheim) Hallem

Condolence From: Gloria Larson
Condolence: Growing up on a farm in rural North Dakota, provided us with a quality of life that I can now look back onto and cherish. While it was not always easy and we were very poor, we didn’t know better and it didn’t matter. It probably made us more appreciative for the good lives we both have since experienced.
I especially remember how we would ride bike and play with my classmate and our neighbor, Judy. We were kind of mean to Arnie sometimes, as kids can be, because he wanted to play with us. And, I say bike, because it was Judy’s bike that we shared. Arnie and I didn’t have one until my 13th birthday and that was the only one we ever had. We took really good care of that blue Navajo bike. We didn’t get new things very often so when we did, it was special.
Arnie was a good sport though, he would play dolls with me and I would play cowboys with him. When you grow up on a farm as we did, there were no other kids around so we had to play together. I remember us being quite adventurous and even climbed on top of the farm building roofs. One day we got really brave and decided to climb the big barn, which was really high but pretty easy to climb. Don’t remember how much trouble we got into for doing that but I’m sure Mom and Dad were not happy with us.
Arnie seemed to be the accident prone one of the two of us. I remember when he broke his arm the first time. It was a windy day and the storm door grabbed him and he couldn’t hold it and it threw him down the outside basement steps and broke his arm. The second time, he fell out of the car. He damaged his knee cap by running into the flag pole at school. And he really suffered from Asthma. This one particular time he could hardly breathe, and we were on our way to the hospital. It was a stormy day with tornadoes all around. We stopped at a friend’s house because we could see a tornado on the ground. That was scary. Finally did get him to the hospital and he was in an oxygen tent for quite a while and that’s when we learned he had Asthma. My brother liked farming and worked for a local farmer for several years but because of the Asthma, it was difficult to be in field dust.
I started my first job the summer I turned 16. It was in the town where my Grandmother lived—17 miles from our farm. So Mom, Dad and Arnie came to celebrate my birthday on July 31st. And, it was a good thing they did because a tornado destroyed our farm that day. It changed our lives. Dad decided not to rebuild and opened a bar in Forbes. Shortly after that I moved to Kansas City for school, met my husband and Arnie got married, joined the Navy and started his family. He has a wonderful wife, son and daughter and they created many great memories to cherish. I’ll miss him dearly and he won’t be forgotten for as long as I live.

Condolence: Words cannot express how much I miss my best friend. He could always make me laugh. I will miss hearing his voice, his smile and his beautiful blue eyes.. He loved sports. I will miss him telling me if the Mariners won or lost, and reviewing the game for me. He loved warm weather. I'll miss looking over his shoulder while he was playing text twist on the computer. Most of all I will miss growing old with him. He made a beautiful loving home for us. He gave me two precious children, we will carry on his legacy and make him proud. I love you Arnie..
